We had a great time getting to know Helen Freund and her long love affair with cookbooks, food, and eating out. Which pays off as her career focused on restaurant critic! She dishes about her time in Paris, New York and New Orleans, mentions Oak & Ola, and lists where she wants to dine next (hint: Bern’s is on the list, of course!)
When you want to talk about dream jobs can you picture eating out every night, surrounded by great company, and the bill is charged to someone else? We can’t all be as lucky as the talented Helen Freund, but we can be in awe of how she came to be Tampa Bay Times‘ new restaurant critic.
In our interview, Helen talks about her time at Le Cordon Bleu in Paris where she studied culinary arts, her experience cooking in New York and reporting in New Orleans before she came to Tampa Bay.
Helen and Robin dish about where to eat and what to try at restaurants like the Oak & Ola (which shares a special commonality in New Orleans) and some local favorites Helen has on her must-try list like Ted Peter’s Famous Smoke House andBern’s Steak House.
“I try to make a point of cooking at least once a week and trying something new because I love kitchen projects. I think there’s something very cathartic about following a recipe for some reason. Because of that structure, at the end of a long day if I’m exhausted instead of going out, I like to go home and bake a cake,”
