A team of volunteers transform what was once a vacant plot of land near Tropicana Field into an urban garden serving the community. The vision is to grow it into an education and events destination that the focuses on nutrition.
What was once a vacant lot is now an urban oasis. The mission of the St. Petersburg EcoVillage community garden is to reconnect people with nature. Producer Dalia Colón recently surveyed the bounty with Emmanuel Roux. He’s a longtime restaurateur who’s part of a small army of volunteers who use their food knowledge to educate the public about nutrition—including a group of teenagers from a local nonprofit who stopped by for a tour during our visit.
“We don’t do it, Mother Nature does it. Here we don’t grow vegetables, we take care of the soil and nature grows the vegetables.” – Emmanuel Roux
